ClassIntra for Better Outcomes in Surgery

CIBOSurg stands for «ClassIntra for Better Outcomes in Surgery». The project contributes to patient safety and the optimal care of our surgical patients. The objective of the project is to achieve the best possible health outcomes by routinely recording and systematically discussing intraoperative adverse events (iAEs).

The discussion and documentation of iAEs should take place during the sign-out phase of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) at the end of every operation. Consistent and accurate implementation of the checklist with the involvement of all groups of healthcare professionals is essential to achieve an improvement of the quality of treatment.

CIBOSurg is being carried out in nine Swiss hospitals, representing, with its different characteristics, the broad Swiss hospital landscape incorporating all regions of the country. The changes in the implementation quality of the WHO checklist, the effectiveness in terms of patient outcomes and the economic implications are being investigated in a national, prospective, multicentre project. At each of the nine Swiss hospitals, 40 patients from five surgical disciplines will be included in a before and after comparison (approx. 1,800 patients). The project is financially supported by the Federal Quality Commission.

Healtheconomics sub-project

The healtheconomics sub-project led by Prof. Dr. Matthias Schwenkglenks at the Health Economics Facility (HEF) of the University of Basel aims to evaluate the economic impact of the implementation of CIBOSurg. All nine participating Swiss hospitals have confirmed the feasibility of the economic sub-study and will provide the HEF study team with the cost parameters for CIBOSurg patients for subsequent analysis.

In this sub-project, the financial impact of the intervention, such as lower hospitalization costs (e.g. due to fewer hospital days and possibly fewer adverse postoperative events) and lower outpatient costs (e.g. due to fewer outpatient postoperative treatments) will be assessed and compared with the clinical outcomes of CIBOSurg.

The costs for the implementation and sustainable, lasting realization of the intervention as well as for the training of surgical staff will also be determined, which will also enable an estimation of the return on investment (Head: PD Dr. Jörn-Markus Gass, Lucerne Cantonal Hospital).

Networking Event 2024

At the second networking event, the CIBOSurg project took an important step towards implementation. Around 70 experts from 9 different Swiss hospitals took the opportunity to exchange ideas and plan the next steps together.

The strategies developed for recording intraoperative adverse events were presented at the event. Participants were able to try out the planned e-learning and a simulation directly in exciting workshops and provide valuable feedback.  In addition to the focus on content, the event also offered many opportunities for networking. The participants were able to create new synergies between the participating hospitals and thus further advance the implementation.

Networking Event 2023

At the Networking Event 2023, which took place at the USB, we welcomed 60 representatives from all participating hospitals to presentations and discussions on the topics of “Implementation science” and “Model hospitals”. The CIBOSurg team presented the strategy on how Sign-out and ClassIntra® can be introduced sustainably at the participating hospitals. The strategy was developed on the basis of interviews at all centers, as part of a context analysis.
